Additional Details

An excellent scrap book assembled by R. L. Peters, an African American naval pilot. With many good images of him interacting with white members of his group as well as a large 9x7-1/2 photograph of him in his pilot's uniform next to his fighter plane. Peters was apparently the only black pilot of his unit and was stationed on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea. The U.S.S. Philippine Sea was a Ticonderoga Class Aircraft Carrier, commissioned in 1946. Peters' "camera pass" stamped by the ship's security officer as well as several other small documents are present. In a little pocket at the end of the album marked "Portrait", there is a card from the Buddhist temple of Kamakura, Peters' U.S. Forces Japan I.D. card, in Japanese and English, and a pass for the Enlisted Men's Club (with Peter's birth date, 27 January, 1932.) A highly unusual scrap book, it includes photographs of Marian Anderson, and Eleanor Roosevelt apparently taken while they were visiting the ship or possibly a land base.
